The 6 Things You Need to Know to Recruit Millennials Millennials could be the rising stars that your company/client really needs, so as a recruiter, it is essential that you know what is going to catch their attention. A large number of this generation of workers are still  at the beginning of their careers and are therefore looking for opportunities where they can grow and develop. The key to attracting them  is knowing how to wrap up a role in a way that indicates there is room for them to climb the career ladder within the business. Recognising  what motivates millennials, will give you the advantage of knowing what kind of perks they look for, what level of responsibility they are after and what will encourage them to stay with the company long term. 1) They will look you up online Millennials are the digital generation and they have grown up with the internet providing endless information at their fingertips. It is  likely to be their first point of call in their job search, from seeking vacancies, to looking up further information about your organisation, so its important that the information is there for them to find. Make sure that your company website is professional, up to date and provides all of the information that a job seeker would want to learn (e.g. what you do, where you are located, who works there, etc.) Having an active presence on social media will also work to your advantage, as you can use this to showcase your employer brand and engage younger candidates. 2) Millennial candidates are like consumers Millennials want a job to be sold to them, much like in consumer marketing. They want to know exactly why they should take a job,  how it will benefit them to do so and how they can have an impact on the businesss success. Recruiters can successfully sell a role  by developing an effective talent brand on social media and identifying exactly what it is that the target audience want, as well as building relationships with prospective employees ahead of them applying. 3) They look for opportunities to grow Millennials expect to advance in their careers much quicker than previous generations, so if there isnt scope for promotion at their current company, they are more likely to jump ship at an early stage. The opportunity for learning and developing new skills on the job is also  an important factor when seeking a new role, so offering a training program is a strong incentive. 4) They want  flexibility Work-life balance is even more important to millennials than their older counterparts and younger workers want a job that they can fit in around their family, social life and hobbies. This doesnt meant that they want to work less, as millennials are actually a very hardworking and ambitious generation; however many would like to work flexible hours if given the chance. Remote working is also increasingly popular, with advanced technology and around the clock connectivity allowing workers to do their job and remain in touch with their team from outside of the office. 5) Company culture is important One of the key factors that millennials consider before accepting a job is the kind of company culture the organisation has and whether or not they feel that it would suit their personality and working style. They are much less likely  to settle for generous compensation alone, than previous generations and place more focus on finding a job that they will enjoy and feel inspired in.  A lot of job seekers will  turn to social media and company webpages to build an idea about the companys working environment and the people who work there, so by showcasing your team and behind the scenes insights into the company, it will help your prospective employees to build a full picture of what it would be like to work there.  Transparency can help to reduce employee turnover, as they know what to expect. 6) Its not all about the money Though millennials want to earn good money  as much as the next guy, there are other less tangible perks and benefits that appeal to them more. Work History ResumeA work history resume is a great way to introduce yourself to the new employer you have just started working for. It is not unusual for a new employee to leave the previous company and may want to give their resume a new look, adding some of their own details that reflect their interests and hobbies. A work history resume gives them this opportunity, helping them to add personal details that they may have forgotten to add before leaving the company.The purpose of a work history resume is to show the employer what qualities you possess that make you an ideal candidate for the job. It allows them to see what you are like as a person and why you were successful in your previous job. This allows the employer to see who you are in more detail than just your work history.You can include things such as your previous employer's education, your skill set and any professional experience you have. You can also include things such as how many years of experience you have and o ther relevant information about your previous job, along with how many years it was before you came to your current one. You should not include your entire work history in your resume, but rather, only those years you worked for the same company.Use of acronyms can help to make your work history resume easier to read, especially for the newer employees. Keep in mind that these acronyms do not need to be listed by the name, but they do need to be listed in a section for the particular occupation, such as construction. For example, instead of stating 'Construction Manager' it would be more professional to state 'C+M', which would match the above acronym.Using acronyms to make your work history, resume easier to read is a great idea, because the acronyms can make it easy to add them to your resume without too much trouble. What you want to do is use the exact name of the work history you are seeking, and then combine it with any pertinent abbreviations, such as 'CM' for Construction Ma nager, or 'SM' for Sales Manager. You will find that a general letter format can be easier on the eyes, as well as faster to add into your resume.Make sure you keep your resume updated, keeping it current with the company's needs and trends. How to Ask for A Salary Raise â€" and Get It! Have you earned a raise in salary? Are you delivering as much or more than you colleagues (especially the men!) for less money? Have you increased your contributions since your last salary evaluation? Then it’s time to ask for a raise. Make no mistake, you have to ask. Most companies, most managers, won’t pay more than they have to. It’s not personal, just part of cost control: salaries and benefits are among a company’s largest expenses. Too many women don’t ask for the salaries they deserve. According to a recent Ellevate survey, only 37% of women asked for a raise in 2015. Of those who did, a whopping 75% received one! What’s their secret? First of all, they asked. But more than that, I suspect they used some smart tactics. You can use them too. 75% of women who asked for a raise received one Benchmark Your Salary:   Think you’re underpaid? Get the facts. Look on glassdoor.com and salary.com, and ask around to find out what other people at your level, in your own and similar companies are being paid.   Remember to consider experience as well as title; your manager will too.   Before digging too much at work, check the HR policies on talking about salaries; some companies still have old-style restrictions on this.   Develop  a fact-based assessment of the going rate, so you can objectively discuss where you stand against peers. Focus on Accomplishments that Matter: Yes, being underpaid is unfair. But as my mother says, ‘nowhere is it written that life must be fair.’ Use facts: what you delivered, and what it did for the business, and what that makes you worth in the market. That could include increased sales of your brand or in your territory, consistently delivering work ahead of time and under budget, introducing a new, more efficient way of completing expense reports for your team…anything relevant for your role. Include the reason it was good for the business: if that new expense report system saves an average of 30 minutes (paid time!) per person on each expense report, and 400 people use it……. the money adds up. Don’t rely on arguments about hard you work or how loyal you are; companies expect that from you and won’t pay more for it. Emphasize your  accomplishments and how they helped the business Make a Specific Request: Money can be such an uncomfortable topic; it’s not unusual for people, especially women, to have a hard time with specifics. Regardless of whether it’s comfortable for you or not, you must ask for exactly what you want. That means ‘I am asking for $77,000 per year’ not I’d like a higher salary’.  Remember, you can defend your request based on your benchmarking and what you delivered. Stay calm: During all discussions, emails, and interactions, don’t let frustration, anger or emotion derail you. As soon as you do, you decrease your chance of getting a raise. Stick with the facts and don’t get emotional. The point of this exercise to prove that you are a valuable professional; act like one. Remember that survey? 75% of women who asked for a raise got one. I would be willing to bet that most of them used this approach. It worked for me, my peers, for people who reported to me. Your company won’t give you a raise for free. If you deserve it, ask for it! Why Successful People Use Their Indoor Voices - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Last night I had dinner at one of the more delicious Los Angeles seafood houses, Connie and Ted’s. Little known to the outside world, LA “night life” closes up early every night of the week. For example, it’s hard to get dinner after 10 PM on a Saturday night and the bars all close at 2 PM, latest. So, at this West Hollywood hot spot around 8 PM, lots of celebrities and various industry folks were quietly putting away freshly shucked oysters, steaming lobsters drowning in butter and toasted hunks of garlic sourdough bread dripping with sauce from mussels marinara. It’s an expensive place to eat and drink, for sure. The restaurant chefs and staff do everything they can to make it worth it. What they cannot control is what ruins the experience. People screaming for attention. Literally. Screaming. For. Attention. Among the movers and shakers, families celebrating a big event and partnered folks on a date night like I was, were the people who wanted to be noticed by the rest of us. We sat next to such a foursome. Using their outdoor voices, they shared their stories, reveries, aspirations, experiences and unbridled hysterical reactions to each other. Have you ever been at a bar or restaurant where there are screamers? Where everything they say is whoop-worthy? Where a shrill whistle, a locomotive, rollercoaster and head cheerleader with a megaphone could not compete with the noise anyone of them is emanating? Do you scream in public places, that aren’t parks or stadiums? After decades of looking at some key issues in human behavior and the workplace, it’s clear to me that there is no magic threshold that separates life and work. There is no passage through a doorway that makes you a considerate, confidence-inspiring, attractive person in the workplace, when you are a rude, lout in your personal life. No one has that good a grip or tight a rein on their impulses. So, if you want to be respected, promoted, hired, invested in, or otherwise well-rewarded and regarded in business: start by reflecting on your behavior when you think we are not watching you in that context. Open the door for someone behind you. Quietly wait your turn in line. Leave a good tip. Lower your voice so others can enjoy their own conversations. I can only imagine that at least one of the screenwriting screamers from dinner last night showed up for a meeting with a Hollywood producer the next day. My guess is the memory of their first accidental meeting probably wasn’t there, but the taint of self-importance couldn’t be missed.

How to Make Your Work More Fulfilling I am currently taking Tara Mohr’s Playing Big Facilitator training. I am learning so much and gaining great information and tools to use with clients. I cannot wait to begin using this information on a larger scale! In our very first session, Tara posed the following question to us: what is your work a laboratory for? This question has stuck with me since. I have answered it for myself in a variety of ways. Now I want to pose that question to you. Many of my career counseling clients do not feel actively engaged with their jobs, their day-to-day tasks, or their organizations. Maybe you are feeling the same way. However, even if you don’t feel as though your current work is fulfilling, I still want you to consider the question. Actually, it is likely more important for you to answer the question if you are not engaged in your current work. It will allow you to look at your current job through a lens of opportunity. Every job, no matter how miserable you feel in it at the moment, can be a learning opportunity and an opportunity for growth. Learn about yourself Your job or career might be a laboratory for you to learn about yourself. It may demonstrate for you what you truly value in your life and career, and the impact to you if those values aren’t met. It may show you clearly the type of work that provides you with energy and work that drains you of energy. Learn about your work Your job might be a laboratory for you to learn about your work. It may tell you what messaging drives clients to action. Or it might show you the software that yields the best results. You might find that your day-to-day tasks show you some business challenges that haven’t yet been addressed by your department. This could lead to a new project you might enjoy. Learn about your environment Your job may be a laboratory to demonstrate to you what work environment, team environment or management style best motivates you. Or, it may show you how changing your communication style with various individuals results in more productive conservations. There are so many things in which your work can serve as a laboratory for you to learn! Some may be about yourself, some may be about the work itself the opportunities are really endless. This framework helped me and can help you view your current situation through the opportunity lens. This can be especially helpful if you are not truly engaged in the work currently. Try it and see what you current job reveals to you!

Motivation Monday Save Money, Time and You According to the April 2011 Bureau of Labor Statistic report, 43.4% of people have been in job search longer than 27 weeks.   Believe it or not, this is the lowest the percentage has been in a year.   To really put your head around how long 27 weeks is Thats 6.75 months. Thats 189 days.   Thats 4,536 hours. Now thats a long time. How do you endure this?   Staying positive.   Keep moving forward.   Dont get discouraged. Easier said than done.   Thats why each Monday, I provide some tips to help you fight feeling discouraged. Plan for the Long Haul This undoubtedly will take longer than you want.   Implement severe budget cuts if you havent done so already.   Get the whole family involved!   Doing without is a valuable lesson!   Be realistic.   This will take a while and there is only so much you can do.   Just an FYI, employers are taking a long time to bring people on board.   From the time an employer announces the job (if they do) to the point when the new employee starts is taking much longer.   How much longer?   Thats hard to say.   Consider these things:   there will be more than one interview, the company will have fires to put out,   multiple people with varying schedules are involved, not to mention vacations and holidays.   All this said, the employer might have a great sense of urgency to fill the job, however, life gets in the way. Clean out the clutter Are you surrounded by junk?   Do you feel overwhelmed by piles stuff everywhere?   Can you easily find what you are looking for?   In small segments of time, toss out that which you no longer need.   Put a pile to be filed (because you know where to file it) and the third pile is to sort through later.   Begin tossing.   Thats easiest and you achieve instant gratification! Carve out time for YOU What is it that you really enjoy doing?   Reading, working out, gardening, tinkering with technology or cars?   Build time into your schedule for these things.   Plan it.   Put it on the calendar so it has a spot and doesnt fall by the way-side when you get busy or overbooked.
